Game console sales, 1972–2026: does Japan's ranking match the world's? | Data in Motion #03

Short answer

  1. No — in the opening comparison the 3DS ranks higher in Japan while the Wii ranks higher worldwide (manufacturer totals as of March 2016).
  2. This is not one continuous ranking — shipment estimates, sell-in, production shipments, and retail estimates stay separate.
  3. The final retail comparison uses Famitsu for Japan and VGChartz worldwide — different surveys and cutoff dates, not an all-time ranking.

Explained

Do the same consoles rank the same in Japan and worldwide? Follow home consoles, handhelds, and hybrid systems from 1972 to 2026 through animated charts, launch prices, and selected games, including systems from Nintendo, Sony, Sega, and Microsoft.

Data behind the charts

These tables select comparison points from the video. Cumulative totals count hardware units from launch to the cutoff date; worldwide figures include Japan. Manufacturer sales count units sold into distribution, while retail estimates count purchases by consumers. Missing periods stay blank. The animation connects dated points and cannot establish the actual crossover date.

Annual shipments in Japan: approximate readings from a historical chart (H99, million units)

Source fiscal yearSega SaturnPlayStation
FY1994Approx. 0.85Approx. 0.60
FY1995Approx. 1.65Approx. 1.85
FY1996Approx. 2.30Approx. 4.05

These are annual shipments, not cumulative totals. The table preserves the approximate chart readings; the video rounds them to the nearest 100,000 units. The fiscal-year boundary month is unknown. Small differences cannot establish precise ranks or a crossover year. Comparable worldwide figures are unavailable.
